The Intellectual Relationship between Joseph Ratzinger and Romano Guardini. Silvano Zucal. The Intellectual Relationship Between the Future Pope and the Great Italian-German Thinker. From liturgical theology to concrete-living of the faith in Jesus Christ. Romano Guardini, the great Italian-German thinker, died on 1 October in Munich.

Coincidentally, therefore, Guardini’s influence can be felt in both Pope Benedict’s and Pope Francis’ writing. Many of the contributions Francis has made to the Church are substantively in continuity with this school of thought that can be traced from Benedict and Communio through Paul VI and Vatican II to Guardini.

In The Living God, Fr. Romano Guardini enables you to understand (and finally to experience) God's consoling presence in your soul. When your sins and imperfections weigh you down, turn to the awesome reality of God's love and mercy -- which is just one of the many remarkable themes in Romano Guardini's magnificent book, The Living God/5.

O’Connor was a great fan of Guardini’s book “The Lord,” and my experience of that book led me to other works by Guardini. The one that I most appreciate is “The Spirit of the Liturgy.” Guardini was an important 20th century Catholic theologian and a leading voice in the liturgical movement as the Church grappled with modernism and its own place in the modern world.

Romano Guardini: Reform from the Source, written by another great theological mind, Hans urs von Balthasar, presents a kind of "roadmap" to Guardini's thought. As an introduction to Guardini, von Balthasar's study is intended to challenge readers to take up Guardini's own writings and to find in him the wisdom that has inspired so many others.

In this essay Silvano Zucal, professor of philosophy at the University of Trent, examines the relationship and similarities between Romano Guardini () and Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI.

Zucal is the editor of Guardini's complete works, Opera Omnia. The quotations below are extracted from Romano Guardini: Spiritual Writings (Maryknoll, New York: Orbis Books, ), which I edited with an introduction.
